It took less than 2 years from my H1B to green card, but my category was self applied EB2-NIW. But I was already more than 6 years in US before I get the green card. I guess it is same for employer sponsored case too but employer is willing to file green card for you.
The EB visa application process is in two steps - first step determines your enlgibibility (PERM certification) and second step is grant visa ( green card itself). US congress can not issue more than 7% of such visa to single country - so there is no back log for my country but very long for some countries like India ( See other answer). So I completed the last step in 6 months for Indian friends it is 8 to 12 years..
